Main Roads has released final plans for the $ 90 million
Wardell St-Samford Rd intersection upgrade.
The initial design to widen the intersection will remain the same,
with changes to cut travel times and reduce rat running in local
streets. Member for
Ashgrove Kate Jones said plans to close the Samford Rd end of
Norman Tce remained. “There will also be a permanent median strip
on Samford Rd so traffic cannot turn right into Ardentallen Rd
and Malcolm St,” she said. The Department of Defence is working
on a new entrance to Gallipoli Barracks off Samford Rd. But LNP
Candidate for Ashgrove Campbell Newman said money for the upgrade
could be spent more wisely.
He said, if elected, he would allocate $ 30 million to upgrade
turning lanes at the intersection and put $ 60 million towards
building a flyover from Samford Rd into the barracks.
“I
think both components should be done together at the same time
because they go together hand in glove and by providing the access
in and out of the barracks you take a lot of traffic off the
intersection,” he said.
