ONE of the biggest sheds to be built in Australia is
taking shape at
Toowong in
Brisbane’s west.

The six-storey-high, 89m long acoustic shed is being built at the
Legacy Way tunnel worksite.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the shed would house the tunnel boring
machines and shield motorists and residents from noise and dust.

“I have a plan to deal with
Brisbane’s traffic congestion and we’re getting on with the
job of upgrading our most congested suburban roads and building
vital new transport infrastructure,” he said.

Cr Quirk said the acoustic shed made of Colorbond steel and
measuring 89m long, 77m wide and 29m high would be a temporary
feature beside the Western Freeway.

It will be taken down late next year when the tunnel is completed.

“The acoustic shed is made with more than 1000 tonnes of structural
steel, and in terms of floor space, is nearly 500 times bigger than
your average backyard tool shed, so it’s no small feat to
construct,” he said.

The tunnel boring machines (or TBMs) would operate 24 hours.

When completed the acoustic shed will be fitted with a series of
travelling cranes, which will be used to assemble the two TBMs.

Legacy Way is the council’s 4.6km road tunnel from the Western
Freeway at Toowong to the Inner City Bypass (ICB) at
Kelvin Grove. Once open, Legacy Way will almost halve
peak-hour travel times between the Centenary Bridge and the ICB.

Cr Quirk again acknowledged the Federal Labor Government’s support
for the project through $ 500 million in funding.

Toowong Councillor Peter Matic said the location of the Legacy Way
Tunnel Control Centre, which will be next to the existing Clem7
Tunnel Control Centre at
Bowen Hills, would have less impact for residents.

Council Opposition calls for more scrutiny on parking conditions

Every commercial development application will go under
the microscope in the fight to prevent paid parking “infecting”
the city according to the
Brisbane City Council opposition.

Labor Councillor
Milton Dick said free parking conditions should have been
automatic in all applications after the Westfield
Chermside paid parking fiasco.

“We’ll need to go through every development application with a fine
tooth comb to ensure paid parking is ruled out of every
development,” Cr Dick said.

“It should be automatic now in developments if the Council is true
blue about stopping paid parking.

“They need to be tougher in their conditions.”

Plans for the Rochedale Town Centre were amended to include a
condition for free parking after it was revealed last week there
was nothing to prevent a similar scheme to Westfield Chermside
being adopted.

Cr Cooper said she agreed in committee last week to amend a
condition to ensure free parking.

“I said it would be easy to amend a condition to ensure that the
parking was provided free of charge, that is what we agreed to do
at committee, and that is what we have done,” Cr Cooper said.

The Rochedale Town Centre development application was approved last
night for stage one of construction.

Parking fee fears widen at Garden City

FEARS are mounting a planned expansion of Garden City
will pave the way for Westfield to roll out its paid parking
scheme at the retail hub.

A modification to a development application originally lodged in
2008 is currently before council officers for approval.

The plan, which would add more basement parking and extend the
shopping centre, has raised concerns Westfield will charge shoppers
for parking something it is already doing at
Chermside and will start doing at
Carindale in March.

A Westfield spokeswoman said there were no immediate plans to
introduce paid parking at Garden City which already has a 111-space
park ‘n’ ride feature but did not rule it out.

“At this stage, Westfield has not decided to introduce paid parking
at its other
Brisbane centres but will continue to review how its carparks
can operate most efficiently,” the spokeswoman said.

Mansfield MP Phil Reeves, who is lobbying council to intervene, has
written to residents seeking public support and has received 1050
people against paid parking and 19 for it.

“Not only would paid parking at Garden City be a slap in the face
of the local community, it would undoubtedly create parking chaos
on local streets in
Upper Mt Gravatt and
MacGregor,” he said.

Legal advice provided to Local Government Minister Paul Lucas said
council could change its planning scheme to force Westfield to seek
council approval before it introduced paid parking.

But Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner said any attempt to change the
planning laws to stop shopping centres introducing paid parking
would lead to ratepayers footing the bill for compensation claims.

“The only thing Labor’s plan will deliver is more red tape and
millions of dollars in ratepayer funds topping up the bank accounts
of shopping centre giants,” he said.

Aldi arrival big ticket item for shopping district

State manager Peter Lee said Ritchie’s Supa IGA on
Logan Rd would close despite having “good patronage from
the customers around Stones Corner”.

More than 20 shops remain vacant in the precinct, but Stones Corner
retailers believe the good times are about to return after

Brisbane City Council gave the go-ahead for a $ 550,000
revitalisation project.

The project will see new street furniture and gardens installed
along with a landmark artwork by acclaimed Queensland artist Scott
Redford.

Stones Corner Community and Economic Development Association
president Simon Clarke said retailers in the strip were optimistic.

“There are a few empty shops but I can guarantee there are no more
empty shops now than there were two years ago.”

Mr Clarke said the completion of the eastern bus corridor, regular
Jan Power markets and the opening of several new coffee shops were
signs of confidence in the future of the shopping precinct.

Sam Kroeger, general manager of Stockwell
Property Management which manages Stones Corner Village, said
both the opening of Aldi and the centre refurbishment would bring
life to the precinct.

Businessman Peter Donelan (pictured) recently expanded his
basketball specialty store at
Stones Corner.

Despite empty stores on the strip Mr Donelan said the future looked
bright.

“Several women’s dress shops have opened recently which is
promising, we need more retailers here to complement one another,”
he said. “Being close to the major stadiums on such a busy road has
been good.”

After opening a successful basketball specialty store in

Melbourne, Mr Donelan turned to Stones Corner,
Brisbane to expand.

“There’s a real market for it here and a huge basketball community
in need of team uniforms and custom-made jerseys and singlets.”
